Adam Smith, like Karl Marx, was a philosopher. Both produced models of the world. As scientists have found, it is very difficult to make an accurate model of the world where predictions dovetail accurately with results.

That may sound a little irrelevant, but what it comes down to is that belief in the free market to provide a stable society is somewhat like the belief in socialism to provide a stable society. It is an article of faith rather than a law of the Universe.

Many westerners believe that because "capitalism defeated communism" that capitalist societies are stable and eternal. As this article points out - the divide between the haves and the have nots is growing.

In every society throughout human history, when that divide grows large enough, the society collapses.

Ultimately that is one of the reasons that I'm more "left" than "right" - because I believe that the policies of the "right" exacerbate those things that are likely to exacerbate that divide rather than shrink it.
