Each month I'll be presenting my recommended book of the month. This will be a book that I feel has helped to broaden my horizons and given me insights into one or more of the problems that we deal with here on the board. This month's book is Johnny Got His Gun (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0553274325) by Dalton Trumbo. The back cover of the book reads This was no ordinary war. This was a war to make the world safe for democracy. And if democracy was made safe, then nothing else mattered--not the millions of dead bodies, nor the thousands of ruined lives...This is no ordinary novel. This is a novel that never takes the easy way out: it is shocking, violent, terrifying, horrible, uncompromising, brutal, remorseless and gruesome...but so is war.
Indeed this was a book that brought home to me the terror of way. War is often justified but never without atrocities, no matter how justified it may be. Given the current military campaign in Afghanistan, this is certainly a very relevant read.
